Chris & Meme
How did you meet the love of your life?
We both worked as program leaders for a travel company called Rustic Pathways, taking teens on service learning programs. In 2014 I was guiding in Thailand and friend I had guided with in Costa Rica the year before was working in Australia, and we planned to meet up in Bali for a holiday. He invited along some of his work friends from Australia, and Chris was one of them. We met in Bali and spent 5 days together before he returned to Australia, but we could both feel it was the start of something big. A week later I followed my heart to Australia, and the rest is history.
When did you know that this person had stolen your heart?
I have texts that I sent to my best friends within a day or two of meeting him, telling them I knew he was special. It sounds cheesy, but we both felt an incredible connection from the first night we met.
Tell us about the proposal?
He proposed to me on a beautiful island called Bali Hai island in the Whitsunday islands, on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. My family was visiting from the USA, and we went on a sailboat trip through the islands. He convinced me to walk around with him to the far side of the island we had lunch on, over burning hot, sharp, lava rock (he says this was the final test of my love). When we got to the little beach on the other side he said "It's fitting that we're on Bali Hai island, since we met on Bali" and he dropped down on one knee and proposed. I thought he was joking at first, but when I realized he was serious I said "Yes! Of course!" We didn't realize until we got back to the boat that he had cut his knee on the coral when he knelt down!
Explain to us how you found Wear Your Love?
I wanted an affordable, ethically made dress that was boho and classically beautiful. I found Wear Your Love through online searches, and I can't believe how perfectly this company aligned with my desires and beliefs!
When did you know you had found your perfect dress?
As soon as I saw the Cleo dress, I knew it was the one! Classic, classy, beautiful, comfortable, affordable, and made to fit. It was perfect!
What went through your mind when the Wear Your Love box arrived at your doorstep, and you pulled out your dress for the first time?
The dress arrived at my parents' house before I did as I was traveling there from Australia! My mom unpacked the dress while video chatting with me, and I could tell even from afar that it was something special. After I arrived, I was antsy to try it on, and it fit exactly perfectly! I was ecstatic!
What was your wedding theme or style?
Copper and sage. Relaxed and down-to-earth with a desert-chic twist.
Let's show your wedding venue some love! What is the name of the wedding venue you chose and why did you choose them for your special day?
You won't believe it when you see the photos, but we got married on my high school soccer field. My high school, Verde Valley School (an international boarding school in Sedona, Arizona), is an incredible place, both for its a breathtaking natural beauty and for the kind of experience it provides for students. My time there was such an important part of my life, and I always dreamed of gathering friends and family from around the world there for my wedding. It's a powerful, magical place.
What was on your wedding soundtrack playlist, aisle, reception, and first dance?
I walked down the aisle to Norah Jones, Come Away With Me, and after the ceremony, the wedding party danced back down the aisle to September by Earth Wind and Fire. Our first dance was to Tus Pies by Nahko and Medicine for the People, and we told our live band that we loved 90's hits, so there was definitely a moment when EVERYONE ran to the dance floor for a Spice Girls hit.
Tell us who was involved in making your special day perfect?
Hair: Jasmine from @carriekacen https://www.facebook.com/carrieannkacen/ Band: The Lucky Devils Band @luckydevilsband Caterers: Verde Valley School @verdevalleyschool Florist: Bashas Florists @bashasmarkets
Tell us your favorite moment from your wedding?
Oh gosh, I don't think I can choose just one. So, one of many - a bunch of people (I and the groom included) planned to spend the night on the field under our big tent. Just minutes after the last trolley left with the final people who weren't sleeping there, there was a HUGE peal of thunder, and it started torrentially raining. Thus, began the wet, muddy, dance party part of the evening. It was awesome, and perfect timing!
Do you have any advice or words of wisdom for anyone planning a wedding?
If you're planning the wedding yourself, make sure you have someone on the day of who you can delegate to who knows your vision and you can trust to pull all the loose ends together. I had a few rock star friends who stepped up to do this at the last minute when all the deliveries had run late, and my mom and I had to leave to get ready, and everything wasn't finished yet. Also, just trust and remember to breathe and enjoy. If friends and family come together to celebrate your love, it's going to be a wonderful, unforgettable time no matter what.
How would you rate your overall experience with Wear Your Love?
5 out of 5 stars.
Congratulations Chris & Meme!
May the years ahead be filled with lasting joy for you two.
Meme is wearing the Cleo dress, with a floor-length train, and nude lining.
How did you come across Wear Your Love?
Pinterest! Years before Dylan and I were even engaged. I had pinned the Ellora dress and it had stolen my heart from the beginning. After getting engaged I spent months trying on gowns, enduring the uncomfortable moments of trying on dresses that everyone else wanted me to try on. I just couldn’t shake the Ellora from my mind, and I knew I had to have it.
When did you know that this person had stolen your heart?
The very first time we spoke. I can honestly say I knew I would marry him from the moment I met him. His soul spoke to mine.
Tell us about the proposal ...
Both of us could tell this was a once in a lifetime love. But I knew Ben would put too much pressure on the perfection of something like a proposal. So after a quick check with his friends and family, and most importantly with my girls, I decided to propose to him! I got a special t-shirt made, and wrote my proposal on a softball. Just before the start of his Friday night game Ben's brother and the umpire helped get Ben over to home plate so we could scoot out to the pitcher's mound and pitch him the ball. I am an incredibly shy person for speaking in front of crowds, so I was really nervous... but it was (almost) perfect, and he said yes! I had gotten his whole family there, including a few that never attend his games, so I am pretty sure he knew something was up. I do know he was still surprised though, not a lot of guys get their own special proposal!
